Tasman - Travel & Information
The Tasman region of New Zealand covers at the north west corner of South Island, just above the West Coast Region. To the east lies Marlborough and to the southeast is Canterbury. Also nestled within Tasman is the separate administrative region for Nelson.
Geographically, the topography of Tasman is very diverse, ranging from mountains to large plains and valleys. The western side of Tasman is bounded by the Matiri Ranges, Tasman Mountains and the Tasman Sea. Tasman and Golden Bays form the coastline to the north. The eastern boundary includes part of the Spencer Mountains and the Saint Arnaud and Richmond Ranges. To the south are the Victoria Ranges which contain Mount Franklin (2,340m), the highest point in Tasman.
Tasman is renown for beautiful landscape and stunning scenery, which make it a popular tourist destination for those seeking the outdoors. It is home to three National Parks; Abel Tasman National Park, Nelson Lakes National Park and Kahurangi National Park. Together these cover nearly 5,700km² of land.
The region also contains Mount Owen and Mount Arthur, which are rich in limestone caves including New Zealand's deepest caves at Ellis Basin and Nettlebed. The major rivers in Tasman include Aorere River, Buller River, Motueka River, Takaka River and Wairoa River. These provide ample opportunities for various activities, rafting as well as dramatic gorges.
Stunning scenery does not stop at the mountains as Tasman is also home to Farewell Spit, 40km strip of sandy, golden beaches full of lush bush and bird life. Then the coastline is peppered with countless little bays just waiting to be discovered.
