Called Kärnten in German, Carinthia is the southernmost state of Land in Austria. To the south, Carinthia shares international borders with Italy and Slovenia. Clockwise from the west, Carinthia shares internal borders with they states of Tyrol, Salzburg and Styria. The capital city of Carinthia is Klagenfurt (Klagenfurt am Wörthersee).
Carinthia is very mountainous, containing the Klagenfurt basin and the mountain ranges of Upper Carinthia. The southern ranges bordering the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy and Slovenia is made of the Carnic Alps and the Karawanken/Karavanke Range. To the north, the Hohe Tauern mountain range with mount Grossglockner (3,798m) separates Carinthia from Salzburgland. East of this range lies the Gurktaler Alpen with the Koralpe on the eastern border of the state.
Klagenfurt, the state's capital, lies on the edge of Wörthersee and the Glan River. The Glan is one of the tributaries to the Drau (Drava), the main river flowing through Carinthia. Other important towns in the region include Althofen, Bad Sankt Leonhard im Lavanttal, Bleiburg (Pliberk), Feldkirchen (Trg), Ferlach (Borovlje), Friesach (Breže), Gmünd, Hermagor (Šmohor), Radenthein, Sankt Andrä, Sankt Veit an der Glan (Šentvid na Glini), Spittal an der Drau, Straßburg, Villach (Beljak), Völkermarkt (Velikovec) and Wolfsberg (Volšperk).
Carinthia - Tourism
Being mountainous, Carinthia relies heavily on tourism. The main tourist activities and attractions are also therefore focused on mountain activities such as walking, climbing, cycling and the like in the summer. During the winter months skiing, snow boarding and other winter sports predominate. Many of the towns and villages are also popular, being picturesque and with some old churches and buildings. Some of the more popular tourist attractions in Carinthia include:
- Friesach or Gmünd - both medieval towns with various old buildings.
- Medieval Churches - some of the popular and notable churches include the Romanesque Gurk Cathedral or Maria Saal in the Zollfeld plain.
- Abbeys - Carinthia is full of ancient abbeys like the abbeys of St Paul's, Ossiach, Millstatt and Viktring.
- Medieval Castles & Palaces - being mountainous, there are numerous dramatic and imposing castle palaces throughout Carinthia, with Hochosterwitz, Griffen or Porcia being among the most impressive.
- Scenic Lakes - beautiful, scenic lakes are a great place to relax and rest. Most popular include Wörthersee, Millstätter See, Ossiacher See and Faaker See.
