Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) is one of the nine states of
Austria. Niederösterreich is one of the eastern regions of Austria. It entirely surrounds the federal region of
Wien (
Vienna) and shares borders with the regions of Burgenland and
Styria to the south and Oberösterreich (Upper Austria) to the west. Niederösterreich also shares international borders with
Slovakia and the
Czech Republic.
The capital of the region is
Sankt Pölten (Up until 1986 the capital of Niederösterreich was considered to be
Vienna, now a federal region in it's own right). Other important towns within Lower Austria include Baden, Berndorf, Dürnstein, Krems an der Donau, Klosterneuburg, Laa an der Thaya and Melk.
The region contains
Stift Klosterneuburg, the oldest abbey in Austria at Klosterneuburg. Like much of Austria, Niederösterreich contains numerous castles, churches and abbeys. Among the important castles are Schloss Hof, Schloss Grafenegg, Schallaburg, the ruin at Aggstein and Franzensburg. Among the churches and abbeys are The Chapter of Melk, Stift Göttweig, Basilica of Maria Taferl, Stift Lilienfeld and the Church of Perchtoldsdorf.
Niederösterreich also has a number of caves that are open to the public. Popular caves include Allander Tropfsteinhöhle, Einhornhöhle, Eisensteinhöhle, Hermannshöhle, Hochkarschacht, Nixhöhle and Ötscher Tropfsteinhöhle.
