About Herzegovina-Neretva
Herzegovina-Neretva is one of the 10 Cantons of
Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country on the Balkan Peninsula of
Europe. It shares an international border with
Croatia and is further divided into the municipalities of Čapljina, Čitluk, Jablanica, Konjic, Mostar, Neum, Rama, Ravno and Stolac. It is known as 'Hercegovačko-neretvanski kanton' in Bosnian and 'Hercegovačko-neretvanska županija' in Croatian. The administrative center of the canton is
Mostar.
The Neretva river flows through the region. It is the longest river in the eastern part of the Adriatic basin and passes under under the
Old Bridge in Mostar, from which people regularly dive. The river and associate valleys provide some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.
Herzegovina-Neretva is also the only canto with access to the sea, through the seaside town of Neum. Neum is thus a popular tourist destination, and is rich in archaeological sites once occupied by the Illyrians peoples who ruled the region from the 4th century BC to around the 7th century AD. The river and coastal access make the region important to the tourism industry, and there are many hidden villages and small towns in the hills and mountains that provide peaceful retreats.
