The region shares borders with both
Coratia and Montenegro and overlaps in part with the Canton of
Herzegovina-Neretva. It contains the only stretch of coastline in Bosnia and Herzegovina, covering some 26km on the Adriatic Sea near the town of Neum. The Neretva river runs through the region, providing some stunning scenery, white water rafting, fishing and a chance to jump of the
Old Bridge in
Mostar. Filled with picturesque villages and dramatic mountain scenery, Herzegovina plays an important part in the developing tourism industry.
The largest and most famous city in the region is
Mostar, with a population of some 100,000 individuals. Herzegovina has beautiful countryside and many historic buildings and is slowly recovering from a recent civil war in the 1990s. Tourism is likely to play an increasing role in the economy, with destinations such as Mostar, the falls of Kravica near LjubuĆĄki and the Vjetrenica caves being popular destinations. Neum is also a popular tourist destination locally as it is the only city on the Adriatic Sea in the whole country.
