About Primorje-Gorski Kotar
Primorje-Gorski Kotar (Primorsko-goranska županija) covers an area in western Croatia. It shares international borders with
Republic of Slovenia to the north and internal borders with the counties of
Istria, Karlovac and Lika-Senj. Some of the main towns are Delnice, Čabar and Vrbovsko
Primorje-Gorski Kotar can be divided into three regions, the mountains of Gorski Kotar, the Coastal or Littoral region, which includes the Bay of Kvarner and out to sea are the and islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj and Rab in the Island Region.
The mountains have a temperate climate rich in forests and streams and accompanying wildlife including Risnjak National park. Some of the main peaks in the sparsely populated region are Risnjak (1528m), Snjeznik (1506m), Bjelolasica (1534m) and Visevica (1428m). Within the region are the Dobra and Kupa river valleys. The area is popular with tourists for various mountain sports including summer walking and climbing, and winter skiing in Mrkopalj and nearby Platak (actually in Kvarner region). Lake Lokvarsko in the village of Lokve is popular for water sports with nature walks and world-class trout fishing.
The littoral region forms a semicircle around the Bay of Rijeka, mostly occupied by
Rijeka town, and the Channel of Vinodo. To the west is Ucka Mountain and around the north are the Gorski Kotar mountains. These have some impact on the Mediterranean climate during the winter.
The most popular of the islands for tourists is Lošinj island with an almost subtropical climate. Rab Island has both shallow coves on the western coast and a wild, rocky coastline to the east.
