Known in English as the Olomouc Region, Olomoucký kraj covers a region in northeastern Czech Republic that formed the central and northwestern part of old Moravia. It shares internal borders with the regions (kraj) of Moravskoslezským kraj (Moravian-Silesian Region) to the east, Zlínským krajem (Zlín Region) to the southeast, Jihomoravským krajem (South Moravian region) to the southwest and Pardubickým krajem (Pardubice Region) to the west. To the north Olomouc shares international borders with Poland.

Olomoucký kraj is named after the city of Olomouc, which is the regions capital. The region contains mountains in the north descending to thefoothills of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and eventual fertile lowlands to the south. Within the hills is the famous Hranická gap, the deepest gorge in Europe at the bottom of which is a water filled pool whose depths are unknown but stretch down at least 200m.

Historically, Olomoucký kraj economy has been rich in various forms of industry and agriculture. Today, the agricultural importance of the region is in decline, and tourism is growing in importance.
