To the north lies Cheshire and then, in a clockwise direction, are the counties of Staffordshire and Worcestershire with Herefordshire to the south. The county, also known as 'Salop County' or abbreviated to 'Shrops', is one of the least populated counties in England. The county town of Shropshire is Shrewsbury, a famous and stunning historic town of England with over 600 ancient and listed buildings. Among the local attractions is Shrewsbury Abbey, second only to Canterbury Cathedral as a place of pilgrimage. Shrewsbury was the birth place of Charles Darwin, and is therefore a popular travel destination in the UK for pilgrims of another sort as well. The Shrewsbury Castle and the Regimental Museum are also very popular attractions. Other notable towns in the county include Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow. The Ironbridge Gorge area has become known as the birthplace of industry and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Site also covers Ironbridge, Coalbrookdale and a part of Madeley. The Shropshire Union Canal also played an important part in the industrial development of the County. Shropshire Countryside.However, Shropshire is also a county full of areas of outstanding beauty. The Shropshire Hills, which cover much of the southern part of the County are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The highest hills are the Clees Hills, and other famous landmarks include the Wrekin, Stiperstones, and the Long Mynd. The River Severn, Britain's longest river, runs through Shropshire.
