Ostrobothnia - Travel & Information

The region of Ostrobothnia is located on the west coast of Finland. Known as Österbotten in Swedish and Pohjanmaa in Finnish, the region borders the Gulf of Bothnia to the West and shares internal borders with the regions of Central Ostrobothnia, Southern Ostrobothnia, and Satakunta. The majority of the population in this region speak Swedish.

Geographically, much of Ostrobothnia is made up of ancient sea-bed which has risen as ice retreated at the end of the last ice-age due to post-glacial rebound. It is therefore mostly flat with a large amount of glacial erratics (rocks from other parts brought here by glaciers and dumped). Rivers meander across the vast plains, much of which is of large cultivated fields (lakeus). The main rivers in Ostrobothnia include the Kyrönjoki, Lapuanjoki and Ähtävänjoki.

Ostrobothnia is sparsely populated, and the towns and villages have both Swedish and Finnish names. Some of the regions and towns are almost exclusively either Finnish or Swedish speaking, while others contain a mixture of the two languages.
