About Aveyron Province
Aveyron is one of the departments in the
Midi-Pyrénées region of
France. Named after the Aveyron River, it is a region of hills, mountains, plateaus, valleys, rivers & lakes that make it ideal for outdoor holidays. In addition, Aveyron has many historical, medieval towns and villages and is home to both good red Marcillac wine and the Roquefort cheese. Some of the top tourist attractions in Averyron inlcude:
- Viaduc de Millau - highest road bridge in on earth, near to the town of Millau.
- Aubrac Plateau - volcanic plateau at the heart of the mountains in Aveyron
- Bastides of Rouergue - Aveyron has five of the 315 bastide towns built between 1229 - 1373. These are Najac, Villeneuve-d'Aveyron, Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Sauveterre-de-Rouergue and La Bastide l'Évêque.
- Gorges de l'Aveyron, Vallée du Lot - stunning landscape in the western part of Aveyron full of châteauxs, castles and some Bastide towns.
- Ségala and Pays du Viaur - dramatic valley region extending from the Lévézou lakes to the Aveyron and Viaur river valleys. Home to the Sauveterre de Rouergue Bastide town.
- Rodez and Vallée de l'Aveyron - covering the source of the Aveyron river at Sévérac-le-Château which flows down to Rodez, founded 2000 years ago, home to a cathedral with what is claimed to be the most beautiful belfry in France.
- Millau and Gorges du Tarn - this area includes the Parc Naturel Régional des Grands Causses, it is rich in architectural heritage and contains the Templar and Hospitaller sites on Larzac.
- Le Pays du Roquefort - the country region famous for Roquefort cheese, offering cave tours of the caves where the cheese is matured.
