Charente, named after the Charente River, is one of the four departments of the Poitou-Charentes region in France. The two largest towns in the region include Angoulême and Cognac, both on the banks of the Charante River.

Charente and wider Poitou-Charente region are very relaxed places to visit, with a serene pace of life set amongst vast horizons and wooded valleys, canals and small, historic towns.
