Corsica - Travel & Information

The French Mediterranean island of Corsica (Corse) lies southeast of the French mainland, just above Sardinia off the coast of Italy. Ajaccio on Corsica was the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte. The main cities on the island are Ajaccio (Aiacciu), Bastia, Corte (Corti), Sartene (Sartè), Saint-Florent (San Fiorenzu), Calvi, Porto-Vecchio (Porti Vechju) and Bonifacio (Bunifaziu).

Corsica is volcanic in origin and the most mountainous island in the Mediterranean. It is about 180km long and 80km wide. The island is a very popular holiday destination with over 1000km of coastline and over 200 beaches. The highest mountain is Monte Cinto (2,706m) and there are another 20 peaks that top 2,000m. This makes Corsica an ideal holiday destination year round, both for beach holidays in the summer and walking and climbing at other times of the year.

Having been occupied since the Mesolithic era, Corsica has a rich history with many ancient buildings and remains. The islanders are deeply independent, with a rich culture and fine cuisine. Corsica is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in France.
