The French department of Haute-Vienne is named after the Vienne River and is one of the three departments that make up Limousin Region. The principle town in the department is Limoges.

For tourists, Haute-Vienne has many forests, lakes and countryside to explore offering a wide range of activities including walking, fishing, sailing, boating and skiing. Much of the countryside is hilly and still wooded, home to the famous Limousin breed of cattle.

Haute-Vienne has a rich cultural & historical heritage with well preserved abbeys & Roman churches like Soulignac and Chateauponsac, and many fortified castles of which Chalus Castle and Montbrun Castle are fine examples. Limoges, department's capital, has a long history of excellent enamel and fine china production.
