About Bavaria

Bavaria (Bayern) is one of the largest states (Bundesland) in Germany. The capital city of Bavaria is Munich, set in Upper Bavaria. Bavaria shares borders with the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony. It also shares international borders with the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland. Both the Danube and the Rhine flow through Bavaria, and the border with Austria is defined by the Bavarian Alps, which contains the highest peak in Germany, the Zugspitze. Aside from Munich, the other major cities in Bavaria are Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Augsburg, Würzburg, Regensburg, Ingolstadt, Fürth and Erlangen. Bavaria is full of ancient buildings, castles and places of historical interest.
