Eiffel - Travel & Information
The Eifel is a low mountain range covering part of western
Germany and eastern
Belgium. Most of the range lies within southwestern North Rhine-Westphalia and northwestern Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, with a small section crossing the border into the German-speaking Community of Belgium. About 110km² are protected within the Eifel National Park nature reserve.
The Eifel are made mostly of sandstones and limestones but the region also showed extensive volcanic activity in the Tertiary and Quaternary geological eras. Eruptions about 10,000 years ago produced ash deposits which can be found throughout much of Europe. Historically, the system erupted every 10,000 to 20,000 years. Many of the low hills and some lakes are volcanic in origin and the region is rising by about 1mm per year as magma rises again.
