Sachsen - Travel & Information

Freistaat Sachsen (Free State of Saxony) is a landlocked state in eastern Germany. It shares internal borders with the German states of Brandenburg, Saxony Anhalt, Thuringia and Bavaria and international borders with Czech Republic and Poland.

The capital city of Sachsen is Dresden and both Chemnitz and Leipzig are also important cities in the area. The area has a long and rich history, dating back to prehistoric times and contains several important circular ditches (monumental temples) archaeological sites dating to the 5th century BC. In the 8th century the region became the Duchy of Saxony and was then incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire in the 10th century. A second Saxon State was established in the 15th century until it joined the German Confederation in the early 19th century. As a result, the region has a rich culture and many historic sites and castles.
