TITLE(About Dodecanese IslandsTITLE(
The Dodecanese consist of 12 large and 150 small islands in the Aegean Sea. The islands are named 'Dodecanese' after the 12 largest islands. Of these Rhodes, Kos and Patmos are the most important and popular. The other nine main islands are Astipalea, Kalimnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Kastelorizo, Leros, Nisyros,
Symi, and Tilos. Some of the islands are much closer to
Turkey than they are to the Greek mainland.
Because of their situation, the Dodecanese have changed hands frequently since prehistoric times, being part of the Median, the Persian and Roman Empires. They then formed part of the Byzantium Empire before being captured by the Ottomans in 1522 and then the Italians in 1912, becoming part of Greece after WWII.
Today the Dodecanese, and particularly Rhodes, have become very important travel destinations with visitors flocking to see the ancient monuments and sites as well as relax on the beaches and enjoy swimming, diving and sailing.
