Campania is a region in southern
Italy. The capital city of the region is Naples. Campania is a very popular travel destination within Italy, famous for Mount Vesuvius volcano and the towns of
Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae which were all destroyed during the eruption of the volcano in 79AD. Lying buried for centuries under ash and pumice, these towns now provide a unique insight into Roman life and culture, and Pompeii has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region contains many other ancient sites and ruins, such as the town of Paestrum north of Naples.
Campania is a shortened version of the Roman name 'Campania felix', which means 'fortunate country'. the region was rich agriculturally. Today people flock to the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri, and it is rich in tourism.
