Dolomites - Featured Destinations

Panoramas of the Dolomite mountain range Italy. The range forms parts of the Alps found mostly in the Northeastern Italian provinces of Belluno, the rest in the provinces of Bolzano-Bozen, Trento and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The Dolomites area is bounded by the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east with the Puster Valley to the north and the Sugana Valley (Val Sugana) to the south. Dolomites - Mountains

The Dolomites has over 40 peaks topping higher than 2,000m, over 20 of which are higher than 3,000m. The highest peaks in the ranges include Marmolada (3348m), Antelao (3264m), Tofana di Mezzo (3241m), Punta Sorapis (3229m), Monte Civetta (3220m), Vernel (3145m), Cristallo (3221m) and Cima di Vezzana (3192m) The region has over 20 foot and road passes that are above 2,000m, the highest of these being Ombretta Pass (Campitello to Caprile), a foot path reaching 2,738m. The highest road pass is Pordoi Pass (Arabba to Val di Fassa) at 2,250m, though more than 10 foot passes through the Dolomites are higher than this.

Dolomites - Tourism

The Dolomites are a very popular tourist destination year round, offering excellent walking, climbing, hiking, base jumping and other mountain sports in the summer months. During the winter, the regions contains numerous popular skiing resorts. Free-climbing in the Dolomites has been popular since the late 19th century with popular climbing centres focussed around the Marmolada Glacier, Veneto regions, the small towns and villages of Alleghe, Falcade, Auronzo, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Arabba, Urtijëi and San Martino di Castrozza, as well as the whole of the Fassa, Gardena and Badia valleys. The Dolomites are also a popular cycling destination, with the annual Maratona dles Dolomites cycle race covering 7 mountains held every July.
