About the Tuscany
Tuscany is one of the most beautiful and most visited regions of Italy, regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and home to some of the most influential people in the history of Europe. Tuscany is divided into the provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Prato, Pistoia and Siena. All the regions contain major works of art an important historical buildings. Within Tuscany there are 6 World Heritage Sites; the historical centre of Florence, the historical centre of Pienza, the square of the Cathedral of Pisa, the historical centre of San Gimignano, the historical centre of Siena, and the Val d'Orcia.
Outside of the historical places of interest, churches and museums, Tuscany also has 120 protected nature reserves and a strong reputation for excellent food and wine. These attractions and factors combined attract millions of tourists each year, with more than 10 million people visiting Florence annually.
Tuscany - Major Attractions
Tuscany has far too many important and popular attractions and sites of interest to list fully. Some of the most popular destinations within Tuscany include:
- Florence - Florence Cathedral, the Baptistery, Palazzo Pitta and many other museums and churches.
- Sieana - famous for the horse races around Piazza del Campo, Tuscan architecture and Siena Cathedral.
- Pisa - famous for the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
- Lucca - ancient Roman city with San Martino Cathedral and tower.
- Pistoia - city of intrigue and daggers with a walled historical center and a silver altar decorated with 600 carvings in the cathedral.
- Volterra - village on a high plateau famous for beautiful white statues carved from local alabaster.
- Carrara - famous for beautiful scenery and white marble, with about 300 marble quarries in the surrounding area.
- Arezzo - ancient gold workshop of Europe, famous for Pierro della Francesca's frescoes and the antiques market.
- Cortona - oone of the oldest cities in Tuscany full of steep alleys and historical buildings.
