Alentejo is the south-central region of Portugal. Coming from 'Beyond / Across the Tagus' (Além-Tejo), the region is shares internal boundaries with Algarve to the south and Centro region to the north. To the west are the Atlantic Ocean and Lisboa region. It shares international boundaries with Spain to the east.

Alentejo is further sub-devided into Alentejo Central, Alentejo Litoral, Alto Alentejo, Baixo Alentejo and Lezíria do Tejo

The capital of Alentejo is Évora and other important cities in the region include Beja, Portalegre, Santarém, Serpa and Sines. The topology of the region descends from granite massives that border Spain in the northeast down to large, open plains with rolling hills in the south. This makes the south good for arable agriculture, with olive groves and ancient cork oaks common. The north is more suited to grazing and animal husbandry.
