Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue) is an important avenue in Lisbon, linking Restauradores Square with Praça Marquês de Pombal. The avenue is 90m wide with 10 traffic lanes divided by pedestrian pavements separated by gardens. This is often considered one of the most elegant and upmarket areas of Lisbon.Avenida da Liberdade is lined with famous fashion shops and highly desirable offices. It is lined with centennial trees, and is used for various processions and festivities, a tourist attraction in it's own right.
Most of the buildings lining Avenida da Liberdade are original, built between 1879, today being used for hotels, offices, shops theaters and bars. The avenue also contains a few monuments, such as the Monument to the fallen in World War I shown in this panorama. Behind this monument is the Spanish Embassy.
The avenue pavements are covered in 'Portuguese Sidewalk' (Calçada Portuguesa), made of irregular calcareous and basaltic stones laid to form ornamental patterns, of contrasting colours. Traditionally white and black stones are used, but sometimes Portuguese Sidewalk is also laid in brown and red. It is a development of ancient mosaic techniques laid by 'calceteiros'. The most famous example of this work is the image of Saint Queen Elizabeth of Portugal in Coimbra, which is 200km north of Lisbon and 120 km south of Porto
