About Évora District
Distrito Évora covers an area about a third of the way up Portugal. The area is land-bound, made up mostly of low lying plains undulating between 200m and 400m in altitude. To the north, Évora District borders Distrito de Santarém, to the east is the border with
Spain, south lies Distrito de Beja and to the west is Distrito de Setúbal.
The capital city of the district is Évora, a World Heritage City and one of the top attractions in Portugal, full of Roman ruins. The River Guadiana runs north-south through the region, at times thorough gorges and valleys over 100m deep. It has been dammed and will create the largest artificial lake in
Europe. The western area of Évora District covers part of the Tagus River basin in the north and Sado River basin in the south.
