About Douro Litoral
Douro Litoral occupies a coastal region in northern Portugal, just south of the
Minho region and north of
Beira Litoral. The main city in Douro is
Porto, named after Port, the fortified wine grown in the Douro Valley. A popular tourist destination, Porto is built up around the historic
Ribeira district. Douro Litoral is one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world, with the wine being transported down the Douro River on flat bottomed 'rabelo' boats and then stored in warehouses at Porto.
Other important cities in the province are Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia, Povoa de Varzim. Douro Litoral also has many historically important settlements like Penafiel, Amarante, Feira and Vila do Conde. The area is relatively under developed and the coastline, part of the 'Costa Verde', contains many beautiful, untouched beaches while the interior is full of traditional villages and ancient sites. Tourism is becoming an increasingly important part of the economy of the region, but development is tasteful with much ancient charm being preserved.
The region is named after the Douro river which originates in Duruelo de la Sierra in the province of Soria in north-central
Spain and flows 897 km into the Atlantic Ocean. For 112km the river flows through stunning gorges forming the border between the two countries. At the river mouth are Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
Flights land at Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport, 12 miles north of Porto.
