About Minho
Minho is one of the best kept secrets in Portugal. Lying in northern Portugal it is separated from Spain by the Minho River to the north and the Peneda-Gerês National Park to the east. To the south is River Douro and Douro Litoral. Important cities in the region include Braga (Bracara Augusta), Guimarães (Vimaraes), Viana do Castelo (formerly Viana do Lima and famous for the Santa Luzia church) on the mouth of the Lima River (Rio Lima) and Barcelos.
Minho is full of lush, green valleys and small villages. Many of the rivers and valleys are covered in small fields and vineyards. Peneda-Gerês National Park is the only national park in Portugal, home to wide variety of flora and fauna, including wolves and golden eagles. Tourism and camping in the park is carefully managed so that those visiting can enjoy the environment while the habitats remain protected.
