Botoşani County lies in north-east Romania, nestled between the counties of Iasi and Suceava, and sharing international borders with both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. The region is relatively flat with the Siret Hills rising to 586m in the west and descending to the Moldovan Plain and Prut Meadow in the east. The capital of the county is Botoșani city.
The main rivers in Botoşani are Prut, the Jijia and the Siret. The sources of the Prut and Siret rivers are in Ukraine. The Prut river rises on the north-western slope of Cernahova, and forms the broder between Romania and Moldova. The Siret rises about 130km from the Romanian border in Beskids. The source of the Jijia is near Dersca in Romania and it is a tribrutary of the Prut river.
Botoşani County - Travel and Tourism
Climatically, Botoşani is like steppe country, with warm summers and very cold winters with much snow fall. Much of the tourism in the region is based around the outdoors, forests and hills. Of particular interest are the Tudora Forest, the beech forest at Suharau, and large magnolia reservations. Hunting is also popular, especially for wild boar. stag. pheasant, or partridge. Fishing and angling are available in abundance on the various rivers and lakes.The city of Botoşani itself contains a number of museums and important historic sites. Among these are Nicolae Iorga memorial House, the History Museum of Botosani and Ethnography Museum. Several famous Romanians originated from the region and are commemorated in various ways. Among them is Mihai Eminescu, the 'morning star' of Romanian poetry who was born in Botosanin in 1850.
Aside from Botosani other main towns include Dorohoi, Bucecea, Darabani, Flămânzi, Săveni and Ştefăneşti. Throughout the region there are many small, rural villages where traditional life and culture thrives.
