About Transylvania
Most people associate Transylvania with Dracula (see below), but the region has much more to offer than that. The region is bounded by the Carpathian mountain range to the east and Apuseni Mountains to the west. Home to the Kingdom of Dacia, Transylvania has often changed hands during the various conflicts within
Europe over the centuries. These various occupations has left Transylvania with a mixture of different peoples, cultures and architecture.
Transylvania is home to some of Europe's best preserved Medieval towns and villages. There is Brasov with citadel ruins and Old Saxon architecture, the cobblestone streets and squares of
Sibiu and the citadel and 14 century clocktower of Sighisoara. Near to Brasov is Bran Castle, the 15 century Gothic castle associated with Vlad Tepes, and the fortified churches at Harman and Prejmer. The most beautiful castle in Transylvania is probably Corvinesti Castle near Hunedoara.
Among other tourist highlights of Transylvania are Densus Church, the oldest church in Romania, and various attractions in the Maramureş region which include the Merry Cemetery of Săpānţa, various wooden churches, the towns of Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmaţiei and the villages of Iza, Mara, and Viseu Valleys.
The region contains the
Apuseni Mountains, bounded by the Barcău River and Mureş River. These mountains contain over 400 explored caves, and among them is The Bears Cave, reported to be one of the most beautiful in Europe, and Scarisoara Ice Cave, the third largest glacier cave on earth. Then there various ski resorts in the
Rodna Mountains, such as the Borşa ski resort and new Valea Blasnei resort.
Count Dracula (Vlad Tepes) was king of Wallachia at times between 1448 and 1476. There are numerous companies offering Dracula tours that take in various towns and castles associate with the man and myth. Top among these have to be the town of Sighisoara, Dracula's birthplace, Castle Bran (Castle Dracula), Curtea Domneasca - his palace in Bucharest, Snagov Monastery where Vlad Tepes was buried after his assassination, Poenari fortress (Cetatea Poenari) built by boyars of Tirgoviste slave labour, Arefu village and Brasov city.
