Ayrshire is a county on the Firth of Clyde on the west coast of Scotland and shares borders, clockwise from the north, with the counties of Bute, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire, Lanarkshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. The principle towns in the county include Ayr, Kilmarnock and Irvine.
Agriculturally one of the most fertile regions of Scotland, Ayrshire also contains some of the rugged and beautiful Galloway Hills within which lies Glen Afton. The region contains six main rivers (River Garnock, River Irvine, River Ayr, River Doon, River Girvan, River Stinchar), which are rich in trout and salmon. There are also many other streams along which lie small towns and villages.
