Dumfries and Galloway was formed in 1975 by the joining of Dumfriesshire and Galloway. It is known by the Scots as Dumfries an Gallowa or 'Dłn Phris agus an Gall-Ghaidhealaibh' in Gaelic. One of the lowland counties of Scotland, to the north lie the counties of South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire. To the east are the Scottish Borders and to the south lies Cumbria in England. To the west is the Irish Sea. Dumfries and Galloway is home to many artists and writers, often inspired by the beautiful natural surroundings.
