Map of Scotland - Loch Garry

Photographer Description of Map of Scotland - Loch Garry

There is really nothing that can prepare you for the 'Map of Scotland' shape formed by the shoreline of Loch Garry. The loch is really long and there is no hint of this as you ascend a hill from Invergarry along it until you come to the top of a rise and - wham - there it is. Uncanny. This panorama was taken around 8pm as the evening light faded but was the only time I passed the point when it was not raining.

Map of Scotland - Loch Garry - Further Information

Panorama over the western end of Loch Garry (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Garadh) in the Scottish Highlands. This loch is affectionately known as the "Map of Scotland" for its shape. This is a unique feature of the loch, and has featured in films such as Braveheart. The shoreline of Loch Garry at this point really does resemble the outline of Scotland as seen from the air or a map. Just pan out on the Google map below, and use the Satellite view to see how uncanny the resemblance is.

There is a parking space at the 'Map of Scotland' on Loch Garry as this is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the area and a major reason why holiday makers choose the slower and longer route along this loch on the way from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye. To get here is only a relatively short detour on the way from Inverness to Fort William, and well worth the effort.

This panoramic picture was taken from the hill of Mullach Coire Ardachaidh above the car lay by and gives a good view of the range of hills on the opposite side of Loch Garry.

Travel and Getting There
Take the A87 from Inverness towards Kyle of Lochalsh. Turn left for Fort Augustus at Invermoriston, 27 miles from Inverness and follow along the bank of the Loch Ness (and rainbow). Continue on until you meet the road to Fort William near Invergarry, then turn north towards Kyle. The 'Map of Scotland' is about 6 miles from Invergarry near the top of a rise. You can rejoin the A87 from Inverness to Kyle about 10 miles north near Cluanie Dam.
