Košice region (Košický kraj) is an administrative region of eastern Slovakia. The capital of the region is Košice, situated in the Košice Basin. To the north is the Prešov region and to the west is Banská Bystrica. It shares international borders with Hungary to the south and Ukraine to the east. Between the 11th to 20th centuries it was part of Spiš, an administrative region of the Hungarian Empire. Spiš is still recognized today as one of the 21 tourist regions of Slovakia, full of important historical towns and castles, many of the designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The region also contains stunning areas of natural beauty, mountains, valleys and rivers. Among these are the Slovak Ore Mountains, which are divided into the Slovak Karst, Slovak Paradise, Volovské vrchy, Čierna hora. In the northeast are the Vihorlat Mountains.
