About Gorenjska
Gorenjska is a mountainous region in
Slovenia. It occupies the upper part of the Sava River north and northwest of Ljubljana. Gorenjska shares international borders with
Austria to the north and around it are the Slovenian Osrednjesslovenska (Central Region) and Goriška Regions.
Gorenjska (Eng: Upper Carniola, German: Oberkrain) is full of natural beauty with various mountain ranges. These include the Karavanke mountains which run between Austria and Slovenia, the
Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Karnjskimi Alps. Important rivers in the region include the Savinja, Soča (Italian Isonzo) and Drava. The principal towns in the region are Domžale in Medvode, Jesenice, Kamnik, Kranj, Škofja Loka and Tržič. Given that the region is mountainous, tourism plays an important part in the economy and Gorenjska offers both summer and winter sporting activities like skiing, climbing and walking.
