The Balearic Islands
The Balearic Islands have always been popular holiday destinations with Europeans. They are well known for the sun and sand, but often people forget that there is more to these islands than the local resorts.
Panoramic Earth contains hundreds of panoramic images from Mallorca (Majorca)
, Ibiza (Eivissa)
, Menorca (Minorca)
and Formentera. Almost all the beaches and Calas on the islands are featured as well as many places of interest on the islands hidden away from the coast.
Naturally, most of the large beaches of playas have hotel holiday resorts built on them, and often the more expensive hotels are found nearer the beach. For those wanting a holiday without using a hotel then there are numerous self catering apartments or private villas that are available to rent. This can give a holiday a more intimate feel than being in a hotel complex and tied to the hotel schedules.
All of the Balearic Islands offer fantastic opportunities for a variety of water sports like diving, sailing or boat and yacht charter. Many of the hotels will have links with particular outlets and are able to provide useful information for those wanting to pursue water sports. Some of the larger hotels may even lay on their own water activities like water skiing and wind surfing, but these hotels tend to be among the more expensive. Independent outlets providing sailing, diving and the like are fairly common and eager to gain your trade. In low season, there is often more flexibility in price.
Driving around the Balearic Islands is very easy and there are a number of local and international car hire outlets. Hiring at the point of arrival (airport or port) may be the most convenient, but is often the most expensive, with companies like Avis, Hertz and Sixt often dominating the market. It is worth inquiring around, and hotels are sometimes able to provide details about local companies which, as well as being cheaper, keeps more of the money within the local economy.
