Basque Country

The Basque Country (Spanish = País Vasco) is the historic region which in 1978 became a self-ruled, autonomous community within the northern territories of the Kingdom of Spain. The capital city is Vitoria-Gasteiz which lies within the region of Alava (or "Araba" in Basque language).

Basque Country is made up of politically designated regions including Araba (Spanish Álava) whose capital city is Vitoria-Gasteiz, Biscay (Spanish Vizcaya, Basque Bizkaia) whose capity city is Bilbo (Spanish Bilbao) and finally Gipuzkoa (Spanish Guipúzcoa) whose capital city is Donostia (Spanish San Sebastián). As the region is officially bilingual, most places are equally known by two different names. Several places are also known by additional names which relate to earlier political designations or traditional names established throughout history. The majority of the population live in the Bilbao area, a metropolitan city and major port on the northern coast with ferry links to France and the United Kingdom.

Basque country is made up of mountainous areas, being close to the Pyrenees and of the wide open plans such as in Alava region. Diverse in landscape and in climate, the Rioja and Ebro region is hot and dry whereas the Bilbao region tends more towards the damp and cooler Atlantic weather. There is a National Park surrounding the highest mountain peak, the Natural Park Aizkorri at Mount Aitxuri.

Although mostly known in recent times for its bold and successful campaign to become a recognised autonomous state, it should not be overlooked that Basque Country has been known for far longer as being a beautiful and lush landscape, picturesque and fertile and producing much of the fines produce and wines which won this region the enviable accolade of having two of the ten best restaurants in the entire world.
