Extremadura

Extremadura is one of the most sparsely populated regions of Spain, far removed from the crowded beaches found elsewhere. Extremadura is a land of mountains and hills, rich in history, Roman ruins and regional specialties. It is off the regular tourist track and provides a truly authentic experience of rural Spain. The map and guide to Extremadura is formed of panoramic images taken around the region by photographers who either visited or live here. Each 360° panorama is accompanied by some local information providing a growing guide to the area. The collection will continue to grow as more images and pictures are added to the site. Select a pin on the map to begin to explore this fascinating part of Spain. Extremadura borders Portugal to the west. To the north is the Spanish region of Castile and León, to the east is Castile-La Mancha, and to the south is Andalusia. The regional capital is Mérida and other major cities and towns in the region include Almendralejo, Badajoz, Cáceres, Don Benito, Montijo, Navalmoral de la Mata, Plasencia and Zafra.

Extremadura Holiday Accommodation

Tourism in Extremadura is slowly increasing and the regular chains of hotels exist in the larger towns and cities. Local government has supported the development of 'Hospederías' on other areas. Also in the countryside are numerous Hostales, small privately run hotel like establishments. A recent development are the 'Casas Rurales', family run large 'Rural Homes' which cater for the agrotourism trade. These are often very relaxed and informal places set in beautiful surroundings. Extremadura also has numerous capsites for those wanting a greater connection with the outdoors, or simply trying to save money.

Extremadura Countryside

Extremadura is rich in natural history, much of which is unspoilt. One of the jewels of Extremadura is Monfragüe, which has recently been declared a National Park. The terrain of Monfrague is rugged and much of it now protected, though some areas are open for hiking, bird watching and other outdoor activities. Another gem of Extremadura is 'La Siberia Extremeña' (Extremaduran Siberia), a vast, sparsely populated plains dotted with small villages whose way of life has changed little. The area contains numerous castles and hidden historical sites like the castle at Puebla de Alcocer.
