Galicia

Galica is the autonomous region of Spain on the northwest corner of Iberian Peninsula. It shares borders with the Spanish regions of Castile, León and Asturias. To the south Galicia borders onto Portugal and the north and west meets the Atlantic Ocean. This Galicia guide provides 360° panoramas of some of the places of interest.

Galicia offers the visitor a taste of traditional local culture, distinct from the rest of Spain, and set in beautiful countryside and among old historic towns and villages. An agricultural region, most of the Galician economy comes from fishing and farming, though tourism is beginning to play an important part. Much of the hotel development is being tastefully done to compliment the surroundings and preserve the traditional atmosphere.

The principle towns in Galicia include Ferrol, la Coruna, Finisterre, Lugo, Ourense, Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela, Tui, and Vigo. In addition there are many small villages set among the hills waiting to be explored. Galicia has a rich cuisine and grows local wines.

The coastline of Galicia is quite crenelated, sometimes likened to that of Norway, with many deep set coves. These are known locally as 'rias', many of which are fed by rivers. The rias north of Finisterre are known as the 'rias atlas' (upper rias), and the terrain here is rugged and quite barren. Below Finisterre are the 'rias baias' (lower rias) where the climate is warmer, the hills more rounded and covered in pine trees.

Galicia is also blessed with a vast number of protected beaches, more numerous than many other parts of Spain, not as heavily developed and more pristine. These alone make the region worth exploring.
