Pontevedra - FURTHER INFORMATION
Pontevedra - Pontevedra visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Pontevedra' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Galicia.
Pontevedra is both a town and a province in the Galicia autonomous region of Spain. The province of Pontevedra shares a border with Portugal and Pontevedra town is just 50km north of the Portuguese border. The Lérez and Tomeza rivers river run through the steep valley after which Pontevedra was named, and most of the tourist attractions in the province are south of the city.
Pontevedra town is emerging as a tourist destination for visitors to Galicia. Pontevedra has several historic buildings, churches and monuments, many of which have been renovated and restored to their former glory as points of architectural and historic interest as well as lending a charming medieval atmosphere to the scenic streets and numerous attractive plazas. Being on flat ground and largely pedestrianised, its easy to wander around the quiet streets of the old quarter in the southern end of the city and soak up the atmosphere whilst taking in the views enhanced by the glorious afternoon sun.
Further northwest along the rugged coastline known as 'Coast of Death' the panoramic views are dramatic and inspiring as the Atlantic Ocean ravages the coastline. Notoriously dangerous for ships, on a calm day with an experienced guide, a sailing cruise offers an exhilarating experience in a superb location. To the south, more urban centers and tourism destinations including the metropolitan city of Vigo, the largest in Galicia and the largest non-capital city in Spain. This historic hillside village of Bayona, or Baiona with its picturesque harbour, sandy beach and yacht marina is further south close to the Portuguese border and a popular destination to visit.
