About Guipúzcoa

Guipúzcoa, or Gipuzkoa, is the smallest region in the autonomous Basque Country in northern Spain. Neighbouring provinces are Vizcaya (Biscay), Navarre and Alava. Covering only 1,980 km² (764 sq mi), Guipúzcoa is also the smallest province in the whole of Spain. About 25% of the population of Guipuzcoa live in San Sebastián, a historic coastal town on La Concha bay. Other important towns in the region include Irun, Errenteria, Zarautz, Arrasate, Oñati , Eibar, Tolosa, Beasain, Pasaia and Hondarribia. The warm Gulf Stream and wet Atlantic climate with a high rainfall have made Guipuzcoa into a lusciously vegetated, dark green landscape set against the churning blue seas of the Bay of Biscay. The region has 92km of coastline, along which are many panoramic viewpoints and beautiful beaches. The colours of nature make Guipuzcoa very picturesque and popular with tourists seeking the outdoor pursuits. With many rivers and forests, Guipuzcoa is a popular tourist destination to enjoy outdoor activities such a fishing, walking, hiking, cycling, trekking and of course photography.
