Luzern (Lucerne) Canton occupies central Switzerland. Clockwise from the north it is surrounded by the cantons of Argau, Zug, Schwyz, Nidwalden, Obwalden and Bern. The capital city is Lucerne, which grew up around a monastery founded on the banks of the Reuss River around 750.

Lucerne covers part of the northern foothills of the Swiss Alps, the Urner Alps, with Brienzer Rothorn (2,350m) being the highest mountain. The canton is drained by both the Reuss river and the river Kleine Emme. Lucerne is a very popular tourist destination, acting as a gateway to holiday resorts in the nearby Alps as well as a link to other tourist resorts and destinations in other parts of Switzerland and beyond to Italy and Germany.

The mountains of Luzern provide almost limitless opportunities for various mountain sports year round. There is plenty of walking, hiking, cycling, climbing and more in the summer. During the winter months skiing predominates, and there are numerous ski resorts scattered throughout the valleys in the canton.

Food is also excellent, with traditional restaurants and guesthouses found in almost every village throughout Lucerne Canton, no matter how small. The small villages are also often a great place to stumble across local arts and crafts. In the larger towns and cities there are plenty of shops as well as night clubs and bars.

Shops and bars aside, for most people it is the mountains and Swiss Alps that proved the main tourist attractions and reasons to visit the travel destinations in Lucerne.
