Ticino - Travel & Information
Ticino is the southern-most Canton in Switzerland, named after the Ticino River. It is the only Canton in Switzerland in which Italian is the official language. Ticino shares internal borders with the Cantons of Canton of Uri, Valais and Graubünden. It shares international borders with the regions of Piedmont and Lombardy in Italy to the south. The capital of Ticino is Bellinzona.
About a third of Ticino is covered by forest, with a large part of the area covered by the lakes Maggiore and Lugano (officially called Lake Verbano and Lake Ceresio). It is divided into two by the Monte Ceneri pass with the northernmost, Sopraceneri, section being more mountainous. The southern section, Sottoceneri encircles Lake Lugano.
The River Ticino drains most of Ticino flowing northwest through Bedretto valley, part of which is known as the Riviera.
