About Uri Canton
Uri Canton lies in the central, German speaking part of Switzerland. To the east is
Graubünden canton. Clockwise from there are the cantons of Tinico to the south,
Valais and
Bern to the west and then Obwalden, Nidwalden, Schwyz and Glarus bordering the northern edge along with Lake Lucerne. The capital city of Uri is Altdorf with a population of about 35,000. One of the most popular ski and mountain resorts here is
Andermatt, famous for the Pass San Gottardo and the Devil's Bridge.
Uri covers the Reuss River valley between Lake Lucerne and the St. Gotthard Pass. It is said that William Tell lived here, the canton uses him a lot in their tourism marketing and the Tell Monument stands in Altdorf, one of the local attractions.
One of the biggest tourist attraction in the region is the Tell Museum, and following the footsteps of William Tell plays an important part in the tourism industry. The Urner Alps mountains run through the canton. The highest peak is Dammastock (3,630m) north of the Furka Pass. Parts of the Glarus and Lepontine Alps ranges are also found in Uri.
Within the mountains you will find numerous picturesque villages, boutique hotels, mountain chalets and apartments all just waiting to help you explore the mountains of central Switzerland.
