Valais (Wallis) - Travel & Information
As this map of Switzerland shows, Valais (Wallis) is a canton (region) in the south-west of of Switzerland. To the south of Valais lies the mountains of
Italy, and to the southwest is
France. To the north are the Swiss cantons of Vaud and
Bern, and to the east are the cantons of Uri and Ticino.
The area is very mountainous with two wide glacial valleys dominating the area. down which the Rhône drains from the mountains into Lake Genevra. There is very little flat land here, which makes the area ideal for mountain hiking, climbing and skiing. All of the terrain has been shaped by glaciation and aside from the massive U-shaped valleys, there are numerous hanging valleys lined with steep waterfalls left over by the retreating ice. Fifty of the mountains in Valais exceed 4 000 m with the highest, Monte Rosa, reaching to 4 638 m (15,217ft). Naturally, with mountains this high there are numerous spectacular glaciers in the region.
Tourism is very important to the economy of the Valais region. Thousands come here in the summer to partake in various outdoor and mountain activities, especially walking, hiking and climbing. Tours also go ice climbing on the high glaciers, and in some places it is possible to ski on the glaciers year round. In the winter, various parts of Valais cater for winter sports such as skiing and snow boarding. Among the prime skiing regions in Wallis are Zermatt and Crans Montana.
