About Istanbul Province

The Istanbul Province of Turkey is one of the few provinces on earth within a country to straddle to continents. The western part of Istanbul Province is in Europe, while the eastern part is in Asia. To the north is the Black Sea and to the south is the Sea of Mamara. The province is split in two by the Bosphorus (Boğaziçi) Strait, also called the Istanbul Strait, which links the Black Sea to the north with the Sea of Marmara to the south. There are only two bridges linking the sides of Istanbul Province, both within the city of Istanbul itself at the southern end of the Bosphorous. Istanbul Province covers about 5,200km², and the capital city is Istanbul, which covers much of the province, and is the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey. The populations within the cities and towns of Istabul Region have rapidly grown within the last 20 years, sometimes increasing more than 40fold in size. In this time, Istanbul city has grown from 8.6 to 12.6 million.
