About the District of Columbia
District of Columbia is the old name for area in the US now occupied by Washington D.C., created by an Act of Congress in 1871 which merged the City of Washington with the Territory of Columbia. Today the area is almost always referred to simply as Washington DC, and is the capital city of the United States of America.
Washington DC is landlocked on the eastern side of the United States, bounded to the east by the state of Virginia, and around the rest by the state of Maryland. Both the Potomac River and Anacostia River flow through the state and the highest point is Tenleytown, 125m above sea level.
Famous attractions within Washington DC include the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the United States Capitol. Other important buildings include the Washington National Cathedral, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Old Executive Office Building and Library of Congress. Central to the city is the National Mall, which is surrounded the Smithsonian Museum, Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool.
