Querétaro in Mexico
Formally known as 'Querétaro Arteaga', Querétaro is a central, land locked state in Mexico. It is surrounded by the other Mexican states of San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Mexico State, and Michoacán. The capital city of Querétaro is Santiago de Querétaro, situated about 260km northwest of Mexico City. Other important cities in the state include San Juan del Rio and El Pueblito.
Querétaro is mostly mountainous, initially inhabited by the Otomí and P'urhépecha (Tarascos) prior to the arrival of Europeans. The main mountain ranges are Sierra Gorda and the Sierra Queretana, both part of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The highest peak is Cerro del Zamorano (3,360m) in the Valley of Querétaro. Climate in the region varies greatly depending on altitude.
Querétaro - Tourism
While Querétaro had a strong Manufacturing base, tourism has been playing an increasing role in the economy. It is the most popular non-beach region in Mexico, though by far the majority of visitors to the state are Mexican. The main tourist destinations in Querétaro are the capital, Querétaro is Santiago, San Juan del Río, Tequisquiapan, Bernal and the Sierra Gorda.
Querétaro contains three World Heritage sites including the Historic Monuments Zone of Querétaro and Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro. The main tourist regions are the Valleys, the Semidesierto and the Sierra Gorda.
