The State of Massachusetts lies on the north-eastern Atlantic coast of America. To the south are Rhode Island and Connecticut with New York to the west and Vermont and New Hampshire to the north. Home to Plymouth, the second permanent settlement established by English settlers and landing site of the Mary Rose, Massachusetts has played an important part in American history. The state capital is Boston.
Geographically, Massachusetts is the seventh smallest state in the US. The terrain was mostly low-lying forest, much of which was cleared for agriculture. The highest point is Mount Greylock (1063m). The Charles River runs through the state from it's source in Hopkinton to mouth at Boston and Massachusetts Bay and Boston Harbour.
Massachusetts - National Parks and Historic Sites
Massachusetts has a number of important National Historic Sites and National Parks that draw visitors each year. In addition the Appalachian Trail runs through the stat's forests. Among the parks and sites are:
- Adams National Historic Park at Quincy.
- Blackstone River Valley - a National Heritage Corridor in Worcester County
- Cape Cod - with 40 miles of beaches in Barnstable County and home to the Three Sisters Lighthouses.
- Essex County National Heritage Area - home to four national protected areas.
- John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site - located in Brookline, this site commemorates the life and assassination of J.F.Kennedy.
- Longfellow House–Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site - built in 1759 in Cambridge, this house served as home to noted American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and was also the HQ of George Washington.
- Lowell National Historical Park - found in Lowell the park includes the Boott Cotton Mill & Museum and other sites related to the era of textile manufacturing in the city during the Industrial Revolution.
- Minute Man National Historical Park - covering protects 970 acres around Lexington, Lincoln and Concord the park includes North Bridge, a monument to Paul Revere, The Wayside and Lexington Battle Green, the site of first action during the American Revolutionary War.
- Salem Maritime National Historic Site - several sites in 9 acres of land in Salem and includes a replica of the Friendship of Salem, an 18th century East Indiaman sailing vessel.
- Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site - found in Saugus, this is the site of the first integrated ironworks in North America.
- Springfield Armory - the pre-eminent US weapons factory between 1777 and 1968, the armory now contains one of the largest collections of arms in the world.
- Westfield River - flowing through Springfield and Hampden County, this scenic and wild river is a major contributory to the Connecticut River.
Boston - National Parks and Historic Sites

- Boston African American National Historic Site - found in the heart of Boston, it includes the Museum of Afro-American History's African Meeting House, the oldest standing African-American church in the United States.
- Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area - covering over 30 islands in Boston Harbour and also Boston Harbor Islands State Park, the islands have nature trails and historic sites such as the Civil War-era Fort Warren on Georges Island and Boston Light, the oldest lighthouse in the US, on Little Brewster Island.
- Boston National Historical Park - showcasing Boston's role in the American Revolution this contains eight sites most of which are connected by the Freedom Trail.
