Located in the Great Lakes Region of the United States of America, Michigan is a derivation of the Ojibwe word 'mishigamaa', meaning 'large water / lake'. The state consists of two peninsulas, Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula, which are separated from eachother by both the lake and 3 states on land. Between the two peninsulas is the Straits of Mackinac, a 5 mile wide neck of water linking Lake Huron with Lake Michigan. While the capital of Michigan is Lansing, the largest city in the region is Detroit.
The Lower Peninsula shares land borders with the states of Indiana and Ohio. The Upper Peninsula shares land boerders with the US state of Wisconsin. The land route between the two pininsulas takes travellers through the states of Indianna, Illinois and Wisconsin. Michigan shares international borders with Canada.
