The Midwestern state of Ohio is the 34th largest state in America. Clockwise from the east it borders the other states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan. Much of the northern border is defined by the shoreline of Lake Erie. The capital city of Ohio is Columbus, but the largest cities are Greater Cleveland or Greater Cincinnati. Much of the eastern border is defined by the Ohio River.

Much of the western part of Ohio is covered by the Central Lowland plains. To the east are hills and plateaus, rich in coal and mining industries. Several large rivers flow through Ohio. Those flowing north feed into Lake Eire. Those flowing south enter the Ohio River which in turn, eventually, feeds into the Mississippi and then the Gulf of Mexico. The main rivers in Ohio are Cuyahoga River, Great Miami River, Maumee River, Muskingum River, and Scioto River. They are rich in fish and popular for various water sports.
