Named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux American Indian tribes, South Dakota is a Midwestern state of the United States of America. The state is landlocked, surrounded by the other states of North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. The capital city of South Dakota is Pierre, but the largest city in the state is Sioux Falls.
The Missouri River flows through South Dakota, effectively bisecting the state into two regions, known as East River and West River by locals. Most of the population lives in the east, where agriculture is predominant. In the west the land is more suited to ranching.
South Dakota is home to the Black Hills which contains Mount Rushmore, an important tourist attraction. These hills are also of deep religious significance to local American Indians. Other important tourist attractions within South Dakota include Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Black Hills National Park and Deadwood.
