Utah - Travel & Information
Utah, the 45th state admitted to the Union, lies in Western United States and is very sparsely populated. It is most well known for Salt Lake City (the state capital), the Mormons, the Bonneville Salt Flats where land speed records are attempted, and beautiful national parks. Clockwise from the North, Utah borders the states of Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. It touches New Mexico at Four Corners in the southeast.
Geographically, Utah can be divided into three distinct regions: Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin, and the Colorado Plateau. Throughout the state the terrain is varied, ranging from arid deserts and sand dunes to lush pine forests and mountain valleys. The northern centre of Utah is home to the Wasatch Range of mountains in which are some excellent skit resorts. The highest mountain in the state is Kings Peak (4,123m), which is found in the Uinta Mountains in the northeastern section.
Much of western Utah is comprised of arid desert, with a basin punctuated by low mountain ranges. Much of this area formed the bed of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric pluvial lake, which is thought to have dried out about 14,000 years ago. Bonneville Salt Flats, Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake, Sevier Lake, and Rush Lake are all remnants of this ancient freshwater lake. The Bonneville Salt Flats are famous for high speed car trials and land-speed records.
The southern sections of the state are home to sandstone plateaus, which contain many famous and popular rock formations and national parks. Among these are Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion national parks, Cedar Breaks, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Hovenweep, and Natural Bridges national monuments, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (site of the popular tourist destination, Lake Powell), Dead Horse Point and Goblin Valley state parks, and Monument Valley. These form some of the most popular tourist destinations in the state.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the state was occupied by the Anasazi and the Fremont tribes of Indians in the 15th century with the Navajo, Goshute, Paiute, Shoshone and the Ute peoples arriving in the 18th century. Spanish had explored parts of Southern Utah in the 15th century, but not settled here. Fur traders eventually settled here in the 19th century.

In addition there are seven National Monuments, two national recreation areas, six national forests and a myriad of other state parks and monuments.
The southern part of Utah contains Moab region, famous for excellent mountain biking and the semi-annual Moab Jeep Safari. One of the most famous and popular mountain biking trails is Slickrock, a 13-mile (20.9 km) route over petrified sand dunes and desert.
In addition to the outdoor attractions and winter sports (see below), Utah has many cultural attractions to offer visitors. Popular cultura events include the Sundance Film Festival, the Red Rock Film Festival, the DOCUTAH Film Festival, and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Temple Square in Utah is ranked as the 16th most visited tourist attraction in the United States with over five million annual visitors.
Utah - Winter Sports and Skiing
Since holding the 2002 Winter Olympics, Utah has seen a dramatic increase in skiing and wither sports. The United States Ski Team is based at Park City, around which are the Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort, and Canyons Resort, all with excellent skiing and snow-boarding opportunities. Deer Valley ski resort is often ranked among the top ski resorts in the USA.
Utah is also popular among skiers as the main resorts are clustered close together and near large, international airports, unlike many other ski area in the US. In Southern Utah there is Brian Head Ski Resort in the mountains near Cedar City.
